The decision about care

A prescription begins with a care decision

Before choosing a place, ask who will decide whether a medicine fits. Bring the reason you want care, not just the name of a treatment.

Prescription
An instruction to supply medicine; the person issuing it is a doctor or another health professional licensed for that task.

Under the US rule checked September 26, 2026, a prescription medicine needs that order before the pharmacy supplies it.

Telehealth
Telehealth brings the conversation to a screen, a phone or an exchange of answers online.

A screen visit still needs a care conversation

For that discussion, look at licensed online care or a clinic visit. Ask how each would check your health and whether a medicine suits you.

State boards issuing doctor licences share a group, the Federation of State Medical Boards; states write their own rules, and the group supplies model guidance.

That guidance, reviewed September 26, 2026, rejects medicine orders based only on a fixed set of online questions.

The person deciding about your medicine needs enough information about your health to make that decision.

The visit may include a form whose questions respond to your answers, provided the doctor can come back to you with further questions.

A changing form alone does not tell you whether the visit is enough. Ask for a way to talk with whoever reviews your answers, and ask whether you need an exam or test.

Where you sit matters

Your state at the time of an online visit is the one that must license the doctor or otherwise permit their work, says guidance reviewed September 26, 2026.

Name the state you expect to be in for that conversation. Ask how to check the doctor’s permission to work there.

Match the names with public records

Bring enough of your story to ask useful questions

The guidance gives the doctor responsibility for any exam or test your assessment needs, either by arranging it or referring you to someone able to provide it.
